HSN codes

HSN codes for a stationery or book shop.

A school list touches a dozen headings: printed books, notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, erasers and files are all different, and a pencil and an eraser are not even in the same chapter. A greeting-card or toy corner adds more.

What you need to know

Using these codes.

01 · Worth knowing

Printed and blank are different headings

A printed book (4901) and a blank notebook (4820) sit on the same shelf under different headings: one is printed matter, the other paper made into a register. Pens (9608) and pencils (9609) are neighbours; the eraser beside them is rubber, in chapter 40 (4016).

02 · On the bill

Where these codes go on a bill

The code goes on each line of a GST tax invoice, beside the item. In BillCountr it is saved on the item and suggested from this list as you add it; it prints on bills from the Android app once the HSN field is switched on in your bill settings. Bills made on a computer do not print it yet.

  • One code per line, beside the item
  • Suggested as you add the item
  • Saved once, on the item
  • Printed when the HSN field is on
