The cheapest POS terminal is the phone already in the shop

A traditional point-of-sale setup is a machine, a scanner, a printer, a cash drawer and somebody to install it. Most Indian shops do not need that and cannot justify it. The camera is the scanner, the phone is the terminal, and a second counter is a second phone signed into the same shop — not another licence and another box.

02 · Speed

Scan, quantity, payment, save

The bill screen is built around the four things that happen at a counter and nothing else. Items come up from the first two or three letters or from a scan, quantity takes decimals for loose goods, the customer is only chosen when the sale goes on credit, and the payment mode is one tap. Everything downstream — stock, the customer's balance, the day's total — follows without another screen.

03 · Receipts

A thermal roll or an A4 invoice, from the same bill

The same saved bill renders as a narrow monospace receipt for a counter roll printer or as a full A4 invoice, and there are several designs to pick from. It prints through the phone or goes out as a PDF on WhatsApp, which for a lot of shops has quietly replaced printing altogether.

04 · Staff

More than one person billing, without more than one owner

Add staff with roles, and each sees only what their role allows — a cashier bills and takes payment without opening purchase prices, margins or reports. Each user gets their own invoice series letter, so two people billing at once produce separate consecutive series instead of competing for the same next number, even when both are offline.

05 · Offline

A queue at the counter is the worst time to be waiting on a tower

Every bill is written to the phone before anything is sent, including its invoice number. There is no path through this where a customer waits on a network call, and no renumbering afterwards — which is what keeps a GST series consecutive in a shop that loses signal every evening.
