What you need to know

How GST is added, taken out and split.

01 · Adding GST

When the price is before tax

Multiply the price by the rate and divide by a hundred: that is the GST. Add it to the price for the total. ₹1,000 plus 18% GST is ₹1,180: ₹180 of tax, split ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST.

  • GST = price × rate ÷ 100
  • Total = price + GST
  • Used when you quote before tax
  • The usual way for goods sold to a business

02 · Removing GST

When the price already includes tax

Most shop prices already include GST, so the tax has to be taken out, not added. Divide the price by one hundred plus the rate, and multiply by a hundred: that is the taxable value, and the rest is tax. ₹1,180 including 18% GST is ₹1,000 of goods and ₹180 of tax.

  • Taxable value = price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate)
  • GST = price − taxable value
  • Used when the MRP or shelf price includes tax
  • The total never changes, only how it is split

03 · The split

CGST and SGST inside your state, IGST outside it

A sale to a buyer in your own state carries two taxes of equal size: CGST, which goes to the centre, and SGST, which goes to the state. Each is half the rate. A sale to a buyer in another state carries one tax, IGST, at the full rate. The customer pays the same total either way; only the lines on the bill differ. In a union territory without its own legislature, such as Chandigarh, UTGST takes the place of SGST. When the tax comes to an odd number of paise, the extra paisa goes to SGST, so the two halves always add back to the whole.

  • At 18%: CGST 9% + SGST 9%
  • Another state: IGST at the full rate
  • Same total either way
  • An odd paisa goes to SGST

04 · Rates

The rates that apply today

Most goods are taxed at 5% or 18%, some at nil, and a short list of luxury and sin goods at 40%. Gold, silver and jewellery articles have their own rate, and rough diamonds another. The 12% and 28% slabs are gone: most goods moved off them when GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025, and the last ones, tobacco and pan masala, on 1 February 2026. That is why this calculator does not offer them. Which rate applies depends on the exact product, and its HSN code is where to start looking.

  • 0% — Nil rated / exempt
  • 5%
  • 18%
  • 40% — Demerit goods — pan masala, tobacco, aerated drinks
  • 3% — Gold, silver & jewellery articles
  • 0.25% — Rough diamonds

Common questions

Questions about working out GST.

How do I calculate GST on a price?

Multiply the price by the rate and divide by a hundred, then add that to the price. ₹1,000 plus 18% GST is ₹1,180: ₹180 of tax, split ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST.

How do I take GST out of a price that includes it?

Divide the price by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100 to get the taxable value; the difference is the GST. ₹1,180 including 18% GST is ₹1,000 of goods and ₹180 of tax.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

CGST and SGST are charged together on a sale inside one state, each at half the rate; IGST is charged alone, at the full rate, on a sale from one state to another. The total tax is the same.

Why can my total differ by a paisa from another calculator?

Because of when rounding happens. This calculator, like BillCountr's bills, works in paise and rounds once, half up, at the end of the calculation. A calculator that rounds each step separately can land a paisa away.

Does this work out GST for a whole bill?

It works out one amount at one rate. A bill with items at different rates is taxed line by line, which is what BillCountr does when you make the bill.
