HSN codes

HSN codes for a garment or footwear shop.

Clothing codes follow how a garment is made as well as what it is: knitted clothes sit in one chapter and woven ones in the next, which is why a T-shirt and a shirt carry different headings. Fabric by the metre and footwear have codes of their own again.

What you need to know

Using these codes.

01 · Worth knowing

Knitted and woven are different chapters

Chapter 61 is for knitted clothing and chapter 62 for woven, so a knitted T-shirt (6109) and a woven shirt (6205) sit in different chapters. Fabric sold by the metre is classified by fibre instead: cotton 5208, synthetic 5407, silk 5007.

02 · On the bill

Where these codes go on a bill

The code goes on each line of a GST tax invoice, beside the item. In BillCountr it is saved on the item and suggested from this list as you add it; it prints on bills from the Android app once the HSN field is switched on in your bill settings. Bills made on a computer do not print it yet.

  • One code per line, beside the item
  • Suggested as you add the item
  • Saved once, on the item
