HSN code

HSN is the code that says what goods are on a GST invoice; SAC does the same for services. What they are, and how many digits your bills must show.

In Hindi: एचएसएन कोड · Also called: HSN, HSN number

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is the international system of codes for goods, and India's GST uses it to classify what is being sold. Services have their own codes, SAC, which start with 99.

Since 1 April 2021, a business with a turnover of up to ₹5 crore in the previous year must show at least 4 digits on tax invoices to registered buyers, and may leave the code off bills to consumers. Above ₹5 crore, 6 digits are required on every tax invoice.

The code is where a rate lookup starts, not where it ends: one heading can cover goods taxed at different rates.

HSN code in BillCountr

The code is saved on each item, and BillCountr suggests one from your trade's list as you add it. It prints beside each item on bills from the Android app once the HSN field is switched on; bills made on a computer do not print it yet.
